Learn more about the scrap car process

National Scrap Car is one of the new breed of car recycling companies whose main focus is customer service and the use of the most up to date methods, ensuring that both you and the planet get the best possible from recycling. In this blog we are going to look at the processes involved in car recycling, giving you a better understanding of why using us is beneficial to both the environment and your pocket.

The landscape of car scrapping and recycling has changed a lot in recent years. Modern techniques mean that a far larger percentage of your vehicle is recyclable; meaning we can offer you more for your end of life vehicle (ELV). We also work hard to ensure that all of our recycling centers adhere to the procedures laid out by the Environmental Agency.

What is involved in this process?

The first part of the car recycling process is to separate the many different types of material that make up your car. This is achieved by several methods; we remove all fluids (oil, coolant, petrol/diesel, screen wash and break fluid) using a depollution rig, we also remove other materials such as the battery and tyres, as well as all hazardous components like mercury switches and air conditioning gases/fluids.

The car-recycling centre can then set about removing larger recyclable parts. Bumpers, dashboards and light clusters are sent to a specialist plastic recycling centre. The catalytic converter and all glass is also removed at this stage.

The remaining metal shell of the car is shredded. This allows them to separate the different types of metal by using a large magnet. Once separated these can then be sent to a relevant mill, where they can be recycled to produce new metal.

This metal goes on to be used in all types of household appliances and everyday conveniences. So remember the next time you are opening a tin of beans, between 20% and 80% of the tin was probably once someone’s pride and joy.

What does all this mean to me?

It means that we are able to offer the best ever rates for ELV’s. With so much of the car now being recyclable we can achieve far better prices, we then pass this increased revenue on to our customers in the form of more cash in your pocket.

Using us as your car scrapper also ensures the environment benefits as well. By maximising the percentage of the car that can be recycled you are reducing the need for fresh raw materials to be extracted from the earth. The more we all do this the longer our natural resources will last. The use of Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF’s) ensures this.
